'Create, Connect and Share with Respect' is this year's Safer Internet theme and ties with our City of Edinburgh Health and Wellbeing 'Be Resilient' topic - 'Be Kind to Others'.

On Friday 23rd February we welcomed P.C. Alan Jenkins (Schools Liaison Officer for James Gillespie's and Boroughmuir High Cluster Schools) to give a presentation on safer, respectful use of the Internet as part of our schoolwide Digital Safety month. P.C. Jenkins described the Internet being a place rather than a thing and used a clever analogy, comparing it to a Library, which was perfectly pitched for our P4-7 pupils to understand, in terms of benefits and risks.

P.C. Jenkins is soon to begin a secondment to Barra in the Western Isles so introduced us to P.C. Amy Fowler who will take over from him in working with our schools over the next six months.

Nine P6 pupils spoke confidently and articulately about the impact of our recent residential to Benmore Outdoor Education Centre and the entire year group was thanked and praised for an outstanding week of team work, cooperation and kindness to one another.

Special tribute was paid to our very own Outdoor Learning Queen, Business Manager Ms Angela Christie, who is retiring at Easter having given her sterling support on countless residential trips to both Benmore and Lagganlia for countless young people.

Online Safety Advice from CYPCS

Thank you very much to P6 and P7 families who attended and engaged with our 'Right Click' digital safety workshop, sponsored by Unicef and BT, on Wednesday 29th August. We are very grateful to BT volunteers Mike Brown and Karen Halliday for leading the warmly presented and interactive event and to Zoey Ayling (Unicef's Programme Support Officer) for providing the opportunity.

Feedback was very positive and we aim to address inhouse the requests for additional sessions, for younger pupils and also a follow up parents only session.

Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People, Tam Baillie, visited Sciennes on Friday 2nd September and it is hoped families will find his team's advice on Online Safety useful in continuing dialogue with their children.

The Right Click: Internet Safety Matters Workshop

Sciennes is hosting an upper school digital safety workshop, sponsored by Unicef and BT, on Wednesday 31^st August between 6.30pm and 7.30pm in the Hall. 

 
We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to receive this fully funded opportunity, part of a UK wide and very heavily subscribed Rights Respecting Schools initiative. We offered the workshop places to our P6 and P7 families via Wisepay on a first come basis and have been delighted with the response, with all 80 places quickly booked, though we are aware that some families unable to book a place have been disappointed. However, BT is also generously providing us with a 'Train the Trainer' session for a few members of staff to support the delivery of additional sessions ourselves in the future.

What does the workshop cover?

The workshop brings together Unicef UK's child rights expertise with BT's technological know-how around internet safety. Two volunteers from BT will introduce activities to begin a discussion around online safety, which parents can continue with their child at home. 

Together parents and children will explore:

 the devices and apps they use to connect online

 likes and dislikes about the internet

 ways in which people can misuse the information shared online

 how e-safety and internet access matter for the promotion and protection of children's rights.

Which age groups are most suitable?

The workshops are designed for children age eight and upwards but the presentation does include a video produced by Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) which is designed for an audience of 8-11 year olds and may not be suitable for younger children.)

How many people can attend?

The organisers advised us that they aimed to be flexible with the number of people who could attend and kindly increased availability from 60 to 80 children and adults. For the workshop to run effectively, parents and their children will be able to sit together in groups of up to ten at a table.

NSPCC ChildLine Workshops in P6

Morrison Construction Safety Assemblies

On Friday 27th May Kirsty and Gary from Morrison Construction - who are building our new Dining Hall - gave an excellent presentation at both P1-3 and P4-7 Assemblies. They not only explained very clearly how to stay safe near a building site, they also described many of the jobs involved in the construction industry.

P7 House Captains congratulated pupils on recent achievements and Ammar revealed that the grand total for Unicef Day for Change was £377! It took P7s a long time to count all the loose change! Thank you to everyone who donated so generously.

We also wished,"Adios!" and said "Muchas, muchas gracias" to Ana Vidal, our final year Primary Bilingual Student from Madrid University.

Lots of love and best wishes to our wonderful Principal Teacher Shona Pearmain, who began her maternity leave today.

NSPCC ChildLine Workshops in P7

NSPCC ChildLine P6 and P7 Workshops

ChildLine Schools Service 
P6 24th MAY and P7 26th MAY

The ChildLine Schools Service is a programme delivered by ChildLine staff and volunteers for every child in the UK in Years 5 /6 ( in England & Wales) and Primary 6/7 (in Scotland & Northern Ireland). ChildLine have been providing presentations and workshops for our P6 and P7 classes every two years since 2012, which complements City of Edinburgh's longstanding personal safety programmes "Keeping Myself Safe" and "Keeping Myself eSafe" in P6 and P7. Parents/Carers received an email about the ChildLine workshops before the Easter holiday.

They will be holding a stage assembly presentation and then a class-based workshop about keeping safe for each class in P6 and P7 on 24th and 26th May.

The ChildLine Schools Service aims to give children:

* An understanding of abuse in all its forms including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse
* Knowledge of how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse
* An awareness of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.

The ChildLine Schools Service has discussed with us the content of the assembly and workshop. We are confident that they are appropriate for primary school aged children. All presentations will be delivered in a child-friendly and sensitive style.

After taking part in the programme, children will be asked to give their feedback online with school staff present. The ChildLine Schools Service would also very much welcome your feedback.
